MACEDONIA

North Macedonia, located in the Balkan Peninsula of Southeast Europe, is a landlocked country bordered by Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, Kosovo, and Albania.

Alongside its economic and social development, North Macedonia is progressively aligning its environmental policies with European standards. A key element of this process is the adoption of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system, designed to ensure that producers and importers take responsibility for the products they place on the market once they reach the end of their life cycle.

The EPR framework in North Macedonia covers various waste streams, including packaging, electrical and electronic equipment, batteries, and other regulated products. Producers can meet their obligations by establishing their own systems or, more commonly, by participating in authorized collective schemes that organize the collection, recycling, and proper treatment of waste on their behalf.

By implementing the EPR system, North Macedonia aims to reduce environmental impact, promote resource efficiency, and foster the transition towards a circular economy. This approach not only strengthens compliance with EU environmental legislation but also encourages businesses to design products sustainably, minimize waste, and contribute to long-term ecological protection.
