Ekopak submitted the Annual Report on Packaging Waste Management for 2024 to the Federal Ministry of Environment and Tourism and the Environmental Protection Fund of FBiH, confirming that the prescribed targets were not just met but exceeded by 4%. In 2024, a total of 22,331 tons of packaging waste were delivered for recycling, with exceeded targets for all types of packaging:
Glass: +3%; Metal: +7%; Paper: +3%; Plastic: +6%; Wood: +5%; Hazardous material packaging: +4%.
Since the beginning of its operational work in 2012 until today, Ekopak has delivered a total of almost 160,000 tons of packaging waste for recycling, which corresponds to approximately 9,000 trucks of packaging waste that did not end up at local landfills, but entered the recycling process where it gained new value.
Development of infrastructure for separate collection of packaging waste
In the first three months of 2025, Ekopak continued with concrete investments in strengthening the infrastructure for separate collection of packaging waste throughout the Federation of BiH.
In the Municipality of Novi Travnik, the public utility company PUC Vilenica Čistoća received a specialized vehicle for the collection of packaging waste, the purchase of which was co-financed by Ekopak. This vehicle significantly contributes to more efficient waste collection in this municipality, which has for years been among the top performers within the Ekopak system.
In Sarajevo, Ekopak delivered 100 new containers to the Cantonal Public Utility Company CPUC Rad, which will enable the creation of 50 new eco-islands across Sarajevo Canton. This investment by Ekopak will allow a more of Sarajevo Canton citizens have access to containers for separate disposal of packaging waste, thereby significantly reducing the amount of municipal waste disposed of at the Smiljevići landfill.
In Bihać, Ekopak’s partner PUC Komrad put into operation a horizontal press for packaging waste, the procurement of which was also supported by Ekopak. This press allows faster preparation of packaging waste for recycling, which contributes to reducing transport costs and more efficient waste management.
Inclusion of public administration institutions in the recycling system
Ekopak remains actively involved in strengthening the recycling system within public administration institutions. Thus, containers for the selective disposal of plastic, paper, and glass were delivered to the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Environmental Protection of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton in Mostar. This support aims to involve public institutions as a positive example in promoting proper disposal of packaging waste.
