The European Union stands at a turning point in its journey towards ‘a climate neutral EU’. The Extended Producer Responsibility Alliance (EXPRA) comprised of national packaging recycling and recovery organizations, stands united in our commitment to support EU in in this journey by fostering climate responsible circularity in packaging.
We acknowledge the significant progress in legislation over the past 6 years like the Waste Framework Directive, Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, and Single Use Plastic
Our Vision:
Directive to promote EU’s sustainability goals. However, the true test lies in ensuring that these legislations are implemented and enforced timely and adequately to achieve its goals. Building a genuine Circular Economy should be a strategic priority for the upcoming Parliament to ensure that legislation is implemented properly and reviewed taking into account progress made. This can foster Europe’s accelerated shift to a circular economy and deliver the corresponding environmental, societal, and economic benefits.
In keeping with circular economy principles, EXPRA and its members are on a sustainability journey towards fully closing the circle for all packaging put on the market in the most efficient, effective and sustainable way. EXPRA envisions a future where packaging waste is minimized, resources are used to its fullest potential, and circularity is the norm. The achieved results in the last over 30 years prove the crucial role of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) to drive positive change throughout the packaging lifecycle.
We have been and are dedicated to increasing recycling rates and promoting the recovery of packaging materials through promoting packaging eco-design tools and efficient collection, sorting and recycling systems. We strongly support research and development efforts to innovate and advance packaging technologies that enhance overall sustainability, on a neutral approach base.
We believe that the engagement of all stakeholders is necessary to guarantee the switch from a linear to a circular economy. EXPRA promotes transparency and accountability among producers, encouraging them to take responsibility for the environmental , societal, and economic impacts of the packaged products they place on the market. We strive to educate consumers, and businesses about the importance of circular packaging and frequently engage with policymakers to give technical input in policy making, on scientific basis.
