For the implementation of a circular economy for plastic packaging and beverage cartons, producers and stakeholders along the value chain have founded the new association ‘RecyPac – Circular Plastic and Beverage Carton.’ Its objective is to establish a harmonized, nationwide collection and recycling system in Switzerland.

As part of the ‘Collection 2025’ project, organizations throughout the value chain collaborated on a circular economy for plastic packaging and beverage cartons. With the newly established organization, this concept is now being put into practice. The organization will coordinate the collection and recycling of plastic packaging (excluding PET beverage bottles) and beverage cartons in Switzerland. Recycling conserves resources, saves energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and creates secondary raw materials.

Farsighted and sustainable solution for plastic packaging and beverage cartons
The industry organization provides a farsighted and sustainable solution for closing the loops of plastic packaging and beverage cartons. The goal of the new organization is to establish a nationwide harmonized and sustainable circular economy system for plastic packaging and beverage cartons.

It sets high sustainability targets (environmental, economic, social) for all areas until 2030 and continuously monitors them with a comprehensive, transparent goal system. By 2030, the aim is to build an efficient recycling system and achieve recycling rates of 55% for plastics and 70% for beverage cartons. The system is open to innovations and developments both domestically and internationally and strives for continuous optimization. The entire value chain is collaborating on this.
This involves an industry solution on a voluntary basis. The entire process chain, from packaging manufacturers to brand owners, retailers, municipalities (with disposal monopolies), and recyclers, is involved, enabling effective and efficient recycling. This means that the establishment of collection and recycling channels should go hand in hand with increasing the recyclability of products, allowing for the holistic closure of cycles.

Next steps: Nationally coordinated collection system.
With the establishment, the nationally coordinated collection of plastic packaging and beverage cartons is also initiated, adhering to the applicable legal foundations: All plastic packaging (excluding PET beverage bottles) and beverage cartons will be collected in a paid-for bag and returned to the collection point. Additionally, the system will be financially supported by its members through a system contribution. Further developments in financing are possible.
