CONAI – Consorzio Nazionale Imballaggi, the Italian PRO, founding member of EXPRA, supported the Permanent Representation of Italy to the European Union – in cooperation with the Italian delegations of the European Parliament’s Political groups – to organize the event “Packaging Fit for Purpose – Tailored Solutions to Protect Products and Prevent Waste in the EU”, held at the European Parliament. The wide-ranging discussion with MEPs, representatives of other European institutions and stakeholders, highlighted the main dimensions related to packaging- and its crucial role in modern society, as an enabler for circular economy in the European Union- product safety, waste reduction, food waste and the local and socio-economic specificities of related to the collection systems.

As the EU co-legislators prepare their negotiating positions on the Commission’s proposed Regulation on Packaging and Packaging Waste, the discussion also outlined key innovative aspects of packaging as a guarantor of product and consumer safety, while enabling the export of locally produced goods, promoting green innovation and sustainability. As the EU takes a critical look at the revision of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD), key stakeholders gathered in the European Parliament to discuss the delicate balance between protecting products, preventing waste, and fostering sustainable economic growth. This event highlighted the different functionalities of packaging and the need for economic actors to adapt to tailored packaging solutions that ensure both product safety and waste reduction.
