A milestone in the EU’s approach to meeting the environmental challenges we are facing is the revision of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD). The revision of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD), initially scheduled for July 2022, has been further delayed.
The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD) defines essential requirements for the design and composition of packaging and sets targets for the collection and recycling of packaging. It aims to improve the environmental performance of packaging, reduce packaging waste and protect the free movement of packaging in the EU single market.
It represents a key opportunity to further increase the circularity of the EU economy, but the ambitious policy goals announced need to be supported by robust legislation, providing a future-proof regulatory framework that stimulates investment in innovation and ensures greater enforcement and harmonisation across the EU.
According to the latest available information, the second part of the Circular Economy Package, which includes the Commission’s proposal for the revision of the PPWD, is expected to be published on 30 November 2022.
